Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor

The former Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor has died at the age of 85
The Cardinal was the 10th Archbishop of Westminster and President of the Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales from 2000 until he retired in 2009. He was the first Archbishop of Westminster ever to do so. Previously, he had been a priest in Portsmouth Diocese and Rector of the Venerable English College in Rome before becoming Bishop of Arundel and Brighton in 1977.
Born in 1932, he was one of six children. Three of his five brothers became priests.
He became ill last month and was being prayed for at Masses throughout the Diocese. Bishop Mark, was his Private Secretary from 2002 to 2008, and Cardinal Cormac preached at his Episcopal Ordination in our Cathedral. Prayers were offered for the repose of the Cardinal throughout the Diocese this weekend.
May this good servant of the Lord, rest in peace.
