From 8 to 80

Over 100 altar servers of all ages from 8 to 80 converged on the Cathedral on Saturday, 8th July, representing parishes from Poole to west Cornwall. Together with some of their families and parish clergy they filled the Cathedral for a Votive Mass of St Stephen, the patron saint of altar servers. The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Mark and some of the priests and during the Bidding Prayers all the servers renewed their Commitment as members of the Guild of St Stephen to serve faithfully and regularly. The bishop thanked them on behalf of the Diocese and their parishes for their important contribution to the liturgy and reminded them that the symbol “PX” on the Guild Medal proclaimed the priority of Christ in their lives, inviting them to walk closely with the Lord even when that was hard. Some of those present had been serving for over 60 years while one was in his second month on the alar.
After the Mass there was a splendid barbecue in the Bishop’s garden in glorious weather. A special word of thanks is due to those who supplied and cooked all that food. It was a bit like the feeding of the five thousand and there were two or three burgers left over too!
