Honouring St Boniface

This year the feast of our Diocesan patron, St Boniface, fell on a Sunday and was marked by a Pilgrimage to Crediton, the saint’s birth place.  During the afternoon pilgrims were able to visit the Anglican parish church which was holding a flower festival and attend a superb and amusing presentation of the life of St Boniface performed by three of the local community.  Later we gathered in the National Shrine to celebrate Vespers and Benediction led by Bishop Mark and Dom David Charlesworth OSB, Abbot of Buckfast,  preached.  This was followed by a visit to the shrine itself, resplendent with a beautiful new statue of St Boniface and an opportunity to venerate the relic.  The music was splendid and led by the choir of Buckfast Abbey under the direction of Philip Arkwright.  We then processed to the saint’s statue in the local park where were led by the Rector, Prebendary Nigel Guthrie,  in a brief devotion.  The weather smiled upon us and everyone agreed that it was a great occasion with representatives from all the three counties of our Diocese.
